A Midsummer Nights Dream in Glamis Adventure Playground

A Midsummer Nights Dream in Glamis Adventure Playground

For six dates during October, Wapping gem, the Glamis Adventure Playground will transform into a unique Shakespeare stage.

The Cornucopia Theatre Company combines its professional actors with children and youths from Tower Hamlets, who perform on stage as well as helping out and learning about jobs behind the scenes.

Invited along by producer, Ella Martines to the dress rehearsal last Friday night we took Wapping resident and fine arts journalist Brad Clark with us so he could share his review.

It was a proper immersive experience, as the audience sit inside the playground around a wonderful open fire which heats water for tea during the interval.

Anyone who knows Brad, will see here that he managed to blag himself the best and warmest, smoke free seat in the house (whilst we tripped over climbing frames in the dark trying to take some pictures):

A Midsummer Nights Dream in Glamis Adventure Playground

In the daytime, the adventure playground on Glamis Road serves as a welcome hub for the young people of our vibrant part of London. Its tall and colourful pylon like logs and offcuts of wood shoot in every direction offering a space to play, hide, escape and a safe space to be creative in.

In the evening, however, the plot of land is usually quiet and lifeless. Not so this autumn with the production of A Midsummer Nights Dream by Cornucopia Theatre Company.

Having received funding from the Lottery Fund and Tower Hamlets Council, the theatre group are working with the young people of Tower Hamlets in creating an interesting and enjoyable interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most loved farces.

With professional actors taking charge of the main roles, the performance maintains a high standard of delivery and pace with excellent renditions of the much loved Puck, Bottom, Titania and Oberon in addition to the emotionally charged portrayals of Lysander, Hermia, Helena and Egeus.

The surroundings of the adventure serve as an ideal theatre set, with trapdoors, ramps, ladders and walkways as well as the use of three stage locations that makes the most of this enchanting space.

The backdrop of tower blocks from the St Georges estate and the occasional whirring siren rushing past this open air performance all add to the atmosphere of an at once magical and beguiling performance that has captured the minds and creativity of the passionate young people taking part.

Verdict: highly recommended.
