White Swan and Cuckoo pub

White Swan and Cuckoo pub

The White Swan and Cuckoo was built around 1850 in Gravel Lane before it was renamed Wapping Lane in the mid 1900’s.

Conveniently located in the heart of Wapping Lane a minute walk from Wapping Overground Station, close to the 100 and D3 bus stops and opposite Pizza Express.

It doesn’t have quite the history of Wapping’s oldest riverside pubs, but read on as the White Swan has a lot else to offer.

The White Swan and Cuckoo pub

Great food, a pool table, sports coverage, karaoke and a friendly welcome have made the White Swan and Cuckoo a hit with recent visitors.

Venture inside and you’ll find people from all backgrounds and ages. Often thought of as a “locals” pub, but the White Swan and Cuckoo is just as welcoming to visitors as its Wapping regulars and we find out how a first time visitor got on at Friday night karaoke.

The pub is L-shaped with a bar and large comfortable sofas at the front. A big screen shows major sporting events and there’s a covered seating area at the back.

Drinks and food

There’s a good range of drinks and prices are reasonable. Traditional cask ale and a wine list is also being introduced soon.

A variety of traditional and locally sourced food is served.

Described by our Wapping reviewer below as “real food, great value and highly recommended”.

Pool table

A pool table sits at the back of the pub and a friendly game is a good opportunity to meet people and have a chat. There are also some pretty decent pool players around if you happened to fancy a challenge.

Resident review of the White Swan and Cuckoo

Gillian, a volunteer at Hermitage Moorings who also runs Wapping’s Up Your Street (events service for seniors) tells us why the White Swan and Cuckoo is her absolute Wapping favourite.

Blustery winter days make one appreciate the White Swan and Cuckoo.

The place especially the loos are nice and clean. The welcome and attention is 5 star but most of all a cup of tea (none of those cheap tea-’dust’ bags but a proper brand) is a mere 50p. I know, 50p! In Wapping! In Anywhere.

My favourite haunt!

The food is piping hot and well-portioned. Not typical pub food but real meals. Fish ‘n’chips, peas £4.99 with a slice of the best bread in town from the reknowned baker up the Lane, crusty edged and spread with real butter. Now there’s comfort on a dull Winter’s day.

All pies and omelettes to sample yet but gradually getting through the menu. And with the promotion card, take a mate or a date and get a main course half price. Apple pie and custard a la school dinner only £2.50.

And I have just negotiated for volunteers (around 50 people) at Hermitage Moorings a free cuppa with the meal!!!!!!!!”

Real food, great value and highly recommended!

Oh yes, they sell great booze too.

Friday night karaoke with Jimmy Batten

Retired boxer Jimmy Batten runs karaoke every Friday at the White Swan and Cuckoo.

You can make your own mind up about the singing, but it’s a well run night and the only karaoke we’re aware of in Wapping.

White Swan and Cuckoo pub and karaoke review

Non-resident Matt from nearby Greenwich went to the White Swan and Cuckcoo for the first time last Friday. You can see him singing in the photo above with Jimmy, but this is what he had to say about his visit:

My first time at the White Swan and Cuckoo last Friday and what a great night!

Living in Greenwich and originally from Yorkshire I wasn’t sure how welcome I’d be.

This is the friendliest pub in Wapping. I’ve drunk in them all! The atmosphere was warm and the regulars and staff were all really friendly.

The karaoke was great fun and Jimmy runs it like clockwork. There’s a huge choice of songs that I picked 5 from and even ended up singing a duet with Jimmy and a couple of the ladies.

Without doubt, a brilliant night out I’d thoroughly recommend!

We have to give a mention to Biscuit who is often found sleeping at the side of the bar or prowling around the pub.

Even if you’ve never been inside the White Swan and Cuckoo there’s a good chance you’ve met Biscuit in Wapping Lane.

I recommend their salt beef bagels if you can’t get up to Brick Lane. Always get a warm welcome here.

If you haven’t been to the White Swan and Cuckoo yet or if like myself you are a long term customer, I would definetely recommend a visit to this friendly pub in Wapping to enjoy a drink in a laid back atmosphere and specially to try out Theresa’s new food menu. There is something to tempt everyone’s taste – from cold and hot snacks and sandwiches to a selection of delicious dishes freshly prepared by Theresa herself and the lovely Cuckoo staff. Last wednesday (curry night) hubby and I had a fantastic lamb and vegetarian curry dishes, with salad and warm bread. It tasted absolutely fantastic and the portions were very generous for a very decent price. Well done Theresa and Salah for the new edge to the WS&Cuckoo and for keeping it still very friendly and welcoming after all these years.
We will be coming again to enjoy curry nights, the great Karaoke nights, for a drink with our friends and maybe for sunday roast dinners….

Had a great Sunday lunch today, it’s got to be the best in wapping and I have tried them all, got to try the week day menu, looks good and the prices are good too, this pub has just started doing food in the last 4 to 5 months. I wish them luck very friendly and in my view it should take off with these diners. Give it a go.

Friendly owners, friendly cat, and enough chilli con carne to satisfy the even the hungriest of hockey players!

Great pub!  I’ve been coming here on Monday evenings for post match teas/beers with my sports team from nearby John Orwell for a while now.  Food is excellent and the landlord/landlady are really friendly, welcoming and accommodating to us. Plus Biscuit is a fantastic cat!

i just moved to wapping (very close to this pub) and wanted to check it out because it looked good and was the first pub i could lay my eyes on from jackson house! also biscuit in the window caught my eye.the husband and wife duo who run the pub are extremely welcoming and the food was great. the pool table is in excellent condition and i think i will be spending an awful lot of time there!

I am a foody and this was one of the top pub meals I have had. The (huge) Sunday roast was a genuine roast lunch (the lamb was mouth-watering) with trimmings you would create for your own family (and probably more). Real food, decent prices and a friendly atmospher make this pub a Wapping winner for me.

The Refurb @ the White Swan & Cuckoo looks Great.. And or the Food MMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • Karen Hanning

Had a fantastic Sunday lunch here. Best lamb I have tasted and plenty of it. Then Apple pie and ice cream for dessert. All for a tenner including a glass of wine. Would definately recommend it. Friday night karaoke is always a blast too.

Very good sunday lunch – more than some can eat!

  • Sarah Crabtree

We’re definitely going back here (tonight in fact) for hockey teas! A proper meal after lots of running around is what all sports players want and the White Swan and Cuckoo really hits the spot – freshly made chilli con carne, portion sizes fit for refuelling, tasty and prompt! The best we’ve had in Wapping, and we’ve been having teas around the area for years. Arup Hockey Team :)

The Swan is certainly a very interesting pub. In the space of a decade it transformed from a spit and sawdust, ladies toilets are only there for the barmaid, pub into a sofa filled youngster friendly boozer whilst retaining it’s east end character (with the same regulars still taking up the stools by the bar)

Sal the landlord is a friendly enough chap, though he doesn’t hesitate to bump up the prices for e.g. big football games.

One of the few Wapping pubs that show the football as well.

  • Emma Padden

The White Swan and Cuckoo has a sophisticated interior with the essence of a traditional EASTEND pub, this comes from the staff and locals that are loyal to both the managenment and the atmosphere the pub generates. On a Friday night you can expect and are encouraged to bell out a tune on the karoke, Look out for regular special events [Themed nights] where a somewhat generous buffet is included in the ticket price!! Everyday the pub serves fantastic pub food, and the managenment take bookings for private functions too! As a local who rarely use the facilities as much as I would like to, I have held several private bookings where the management have taken all the stress out of organising my event. I often walk past in hurry and wish I could relax for just an hour in a plesent enviroment.

I love this pub, have been about three or four times and have always had a great time. I have also been honoured to have Biscuit sitting on my lap one time and as a cat lover it was fab! everyone is very friendly and there is a great atmosphere, can’t wait to go back and sing a few songs with my pals.
