Whats in Wapping

Wapping has London’s cutest cygnets – but there’s always one!

Wapping’s latest wildlife arrival, five cygnets are almost certainly the cutest in London.

But in any family, there’s always one!

Last night we caught the parent swans out for an evening swim on Shadwell Basin with three of their new cygnets.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s been a few years since Wapping has seen any cygnets, so this is exciting wildlife news here in E1W.

But one of the young cygnets had a cheeky little look in his young eye when we first saw him swimming and it soon became very clear why.

“Why swim when you can hitch a ride” thinks the cygnet?

When we next looked round, the cheeky little cygnet was hitching a ride on its mothers back, relaxing in the evening sunshine as the other two cygnets swam around them.

If you fall off, you just have to climb back on

Staying at the top is never easy and as the mother swan bent down the little cygnet slid off into the water and had to try and climb back up, which proved a bit of a challenge for it.

Wapping blogger Paul Kellaway also goes on regular wildlife patrols and yesterday morning we sent him off to get pictures of the cygnets which you can see here and also read about his very varied day in Wapping. What’s in Wapping (WiW) was wearing a winter coat purely for practical reasons before anyone asks.

In 2012, Wapping had the cutest ducklings in London. This year, we think Wapping can claim home to the absolute cutest and cheekiest cygnets in London, if not the UK.

But maybe we’re slightly biased …what do you think?
