Wapping Cable Car pylons appear overnight (updated)

Wapping Cable Car pylons appear overnight (updated)

Residents of E1W can hardly have failed to notice the two cable car pylons that have been erected during Saturday night.

Straddling the historic King Henry Wharves at Wapping Pier, the two 50 meter high white towers have put Wapping firmly back on the transport map.

As is apparent from the photo below, the cable will run right across the River Thames up to the London Shard.

The Wapping end will be Wapping Green initially (just by the bus stop) with an extension to Shadwell Basin following shortly after.

Several Wapping residents we spoke to early this morning were impressed by the modern design, and as the Wapping – London Shard cable car will be ready for the Olympics the transport problems caused by the priority lanes on the Highway should be greatly reduced.

Two 50 meter high cable car pylons were installed in Wapping last night

Installation was achieved so speedily overnight through the combined use of barges from Hermitage Moorings with two tower cranes borrowed from the 21 Wapping Lane construction site, returned this morning, 1st April 2012.

Fares for the Wapping cable car have yet to be announced, but should be reasonable. Oyster cards can be used and discounts are promised for season ticket holders.

A special sightseeing service will be in operation by the time of the Queens Thames Diamond Jubilee flotilla event in June and a discounted rate has been promised for residents of E1W.

Being able to glide up above the River Thames and see the 1,000 vessel flotilla should be something to behold.

Midday update – 1st April 2012

Unsurprisingly, there are no Wapping cable car pylons in Wapping but thank you to everyone who joined in and helped us enjoy April Fool’s day this year and we wish you a lovely spring and summer.

Great to see this plan has finally become a reality. I was out last night walking the dog and saw the men working on this. The speed with which they put the pylons up was very impressive.
