Pizza Express Restaurant Wapping

Pizza Express Restaurant Wapping

As part of a chain, the food is pretty consistent so you know what you’re getting, but it’s worth checking the Pizza Express website for any seasonal updates.

There are many different pizzas on offer as well as a good range of pastas, salads, starters and desserts.

Wapping Comments on Pizza Express are Positive

The only complaint seems to come from Italian residents who say the pizzas are marketed as Italian but are not made by trained pizzaliolos and don’t use buffalo mozzarella. So they are not Italian and don’t taste Italian …

That leaves the location and service and here are the consolidated comments from our

Wapping Resident Reviewers

Jan, Jamie, Cathy and 2 others admit to visiting at least twice a month since moving to Wapping several years ago. And many thanks to Liz (Subliculous) for sharing her pretty cool photo of the restaurant with us.

Pizza Express WappingLocation

Located in the heart of Wapping Lane, Pizza Express is a 2-minute walk from Wapping Overground station as well as being on the close to the D3 and D100 bus stops.

Like many warehouses nearby the unusual listed building dates back to the early 1800’s and was originally used as one of the many Wapping spice factories.

This is a nice change for a Pizza Express as the restaurant has feels quite dramatic, like much of Wapping and is quite a unique venue for a chain that often lacks character in modern shopping centres.

It’s a good size and spread over two floors: the upper level is the main restaurant and downstairs is a lounge type bar, although you can relax and eat there too. There’s also a private room for 12 you can book for functions.

The kitchen is open plan at the back of the restaurant so you can watch your meal being prepared …always slightly reassuring to see what you’re eating and how it’s made!

Pizza Express WappingChild Friendly?

Extremely and whether this is good or bad depends on your situation.

There are high chairs available and as long as you pick the right table there’s plenty of room for them. The children’s menu is mostly a smaller version of the adult one but offers a good choice and you can adapt meals if needed.

Because Pizza Express is so child friendly you can be disturbed by screaming children running around the restaurant whilst you’re trying to have a quiet meal. This isn’t always the case though and if you want to avoid noisy kids our best advice is to eat slightly later or go downstairs and eat in the bar where you can hear:

Live Music in Wapping

Regular Jazz on Saturday nights in the downstairs bar is a massive selling point for Wapping’s Pizza Express. Times and details seem to vary each week but you can check ahead with the restaurant and they have some incredibly talented musicians. If you enjoy Jazz pianists it’s worth visiting for the music as there are only a couple of other places in Wapping with regular live music.

No one seems to know exactly where the musicians come from but they are undoubtedly talented and a complete treat …all for free, so well worth checking out.

Service

Levels of service vary quite dramatically based on what our reviewers have said. For every comment about friendly and helpful staff, there’s another about poor service and waits for food. So please add share your comments here and recent experiences:

Typical Cost

It depends what you order, but an average pizza is around £9 but if you’re on a budget watch out for the drinks as a large beer is £6. With starters, deserts and a few beers the bill can end up surprisingly high so check prices before you get too carried away!

I love Pizza Express, the food is quite good and I love the atmosphere. I always get great service and the family loves the short walk!

I have always enjoyed my visits to Pizza Express. Good value, helpful staff and consistently good food. I also like the ambiance of the historic building which is definitely a cut above most other Pizza Express branches. I get their offers by email (direct from PE) and just received a 50% off voucher for visiting during today’s tube strike.

I like this Pizza Express: very spacious, not too loud and located in a unique building. However, the service leaves to be desired. The waitresses I’ve encountered so far always made me feel bad about what I ordered (no starter, just a pizza, no smile!). Not sure what’s wrong there.

Good review, I quite like Pizza Express, as it is in a rather nice building, and the food is very popular with my nephews – making it a good all-rounder for a cheap family outing. Quite like the idea of musicians of mysterious origin – must check these out :-)
