Open House ‘Wapping’ – Marine Police Museum and Hermitage Moorings

This weekend, two Wapping treasures, the Thames Marine Police Museum and Hermitage Community Moorings will open for public access as part of Open House London 2013.

These are just two of over 800 buildings across London that will open their doors during the weekend of Saturday 21st September and Sunday 22nd September 2013.

Both the Marine Police Museum and Hermitage Moorings are located in Wapping High Street, a short walk west from Wapping Overground Station.

Thames Marine Police Museum in Wapping High Street

The Marine Police museum in Wapping tells the historic story of policing London’s river over more than two centuries.

It is very much an ‘Old Time’ museum, all nooks and crannies. The old carpenters benches are still in place and many of their tools are still on display.

Today, the museum is administered by the Thames Police Association and run by two retired Thames Police officers, Rob Jeffries and John ‘Joz’ Joslin [read more].

Hermitage Moorings in Wapping High Street

Hermitage Moorings invite everyone inside this weekend and are offering River cruises on the Saturday and a waterfront café with home made cakes on the moorings all weekend.

Dutch sailing barge Volharding will be offering trips on Saturday 21st September. Starting at Hermitage Moorings you’ll be able to explore the community of historic vessels and residents will be on hand to answer question on what living aboard is like.

After a safety briefing, Volharding will leave Wapping before passing under a raised Tower Bridge.  As the ship turns around you’ll get an up close view of HMS Belfast, before Tower Bridge lifts again to allow return. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served during the voyage which will last approximately two hours.

Cruise times are 10:00, 12:15 and 15:00, tickets can be bought at hrp.eventbrite.co.uk or on the day at Hermitage (space permitting).
