London Triathlon road closures for Wapping – 28 July 2013

The 2013 London Triathlon takes place this weekend around the Docklands ExCeL and Wapping will be affected by road closures and diversions from 5am on Sunday 28th July.

Around 11,000 competitors will be swimming, running and cycling during the course of the weekend – raising thousands of pounds for good causes on both Saturday 27th and the longer events on Sunday 28th July.

The Highway, Royal Dock and Embankment will be closed on Sunday 28th July, affecting access to and from Wapping and St Katharines, so make sure you plan ahead.

Access to Wapping, St Katharines and Shadwell:

Sunday 28th July 05:00 – 12:00

Access Vehicles can only access the above areas during this time by travelling north over Tower Bridge. At Tower Hill traffic will be directed right along East Smithfield’s to Vaughan Way.

Egress Vehicles leaving the areas listed above should travel via Vaughan Way and East Smithfield and follow directions south over Tower Bridge. From here routes north of the river are possible via either London Bridge or the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

Sunday 28th July 12:00 – 18:00

Access From 12 noon the roads to the West of Vaughan Way will reopen. Vehicles will need to follow the signed diversion from Tower Hill around the Minories to Dock Street, crossing straight over the Highway into Vaughan Way.

Egress From Vaughan Way vehicles can use either East Smithfield or Dock Street.

Access to Jardine Road & Free Trade Wharf

Sunday 28th July 05:00 – 18:00

Under Marshal control access is provided along the Highway between Glamis Road and Jardine Road. To access Jardine Road vehicles must do so from Wapping and Shadwell (see the access and egress details above). If your journey involves travelling north you may wish to consider parking on the north side of the Highway or in the Narrow Street area prior to the road closure to avoid the detour over Tower Bridge.

Through traffic travelling South to North / North to South:

Sunday 28th July 05:00 – 12:00

Tower Bridge and Southwark Bridges will provide local access for residents but should not be used by through traffic.

Diversions

All other river crossings are unaffected by the event, including the Rotherhithe Tunnel, Blackwall Tunnel and Blackfriars, London and Waterloo Bridges.

Tower and Southwark Bridges will provide local access only to residents and visitors south of The Highway & Thames Street from 0500hrs – 1200hrs.

The Highway A1203 closed

Through traffic travelling East to West / West to East

Sunday 28th July 05:00 – 18:00

East India Dock Tunnel, Aspen Way, Limehouse Link Tunnel and The Highway are all closed in both directions.

Diversions

The A13 will provide the main diversion route for traffic travelling east or west in the area but the A11, A12, A200 and A206 are all open as alternatives.

Blackwall Tunnel is unaffected by the event.

Cotton Street, Prestons Road, Westferry Road are unaffected and open as usual.

Bus diversions affecting Wapping – routes 100 and D3

Both the 100 and D3 bus routes are severely affected on Sunday 28th July, so walking or using the Overground are the best alternative options if possible.

On Sunday 28 July, between 0500 and 1300, no 100 service at all between Aldgate and Shadwell. Between 1300 and 1800, no service between Wapping Station and Shadwell. At this time, eastbound buses will not serve East Smithfield.

On Sunday 28 July, between 0500 and 1800, the D3 is diverted direct via Commercial Road, between New Road and Limehouse Station, in both directions, not serving Shadwell or Wapping.
