Fireworks and Happy New Year from What’s in Wapping

Fireworks and Happy New Year from What’s in Wapping

We hope you had a lovely New Year celebration wherever you spent it and wish you the very best of health and happiness in 2014.

Last night, we made the most of living in Wapping which is so close to central London and enjoyed the incredible London Eye fireworks display from the north bank of the River Thames.

Highly recommended. The fireworks get more impressive every year with peach snow, banana confetti and orange-flavoured bubbles falling on the crowd as giant multi-coloured fireworks exploded in time to music this year.

Huge numbers of emergency services and volunteers work on New Year’s Eve, so with Wapping’s close ties to the River Thames, we want to give a special mention to those who supported from the water and are often forgotten.

Amongst other things, Tower RNLI successfully dealt with sick people on passenger boats and a sinking cruiser on New Year’s Eve. Tower RNLI used to be based near Wapping until they moved to their current station near Embankment. Visit www.towerrnli.org.uk for more information and follow them on Twitter @TowerRNLI

Here were the crew of Hurley Burly E-07 last night passing in front of the London Eye just after 11pm on New Year’s Eve.

The Marine Police Unit of the Metropolitan Police is based on the River Thames in Wapping High Street and officers were seen in a number of Police Boats last night responding to calls and working closely with the RNLI.

These are two of the Marine Police Unit Targa boats passing in front of the London Eye just minutes before the fireworks exploded. Follow the Metropolitan Marine Police on Tiwtter @MPSonthewater.
