Dennis St Croix – A Wapping legend and local hero

Dennis St Croix – A Wapping legend and local hero

Over 300 family and friends attended the unveiling of a memorial bench in Wapping Gardens in memory of Dennis St Croix, on Saturday 23rd July 2012.

Dennis had hoped to carry the Olympic Torch through Tower Hamlets, but passed away on 11th June and daughter Yasmine, 13 carried the Torch on his behalf.

Son, Thomas, 10 ran a lap of honour with the Olympic Torch in the Wapping park after Yasmine had cut the ribbon. Thomas fixed the memorial plaque to the bench, which reads:

“In memory of Dennis St Croix ~ 1963-2012 ~ A Wapping legend and local hero”

Dennis St Croix was a tireless fundraiser and worked at Wapping Youth Club and at the John Orwell Sports Centre – where he and his wife Edith met.

A petition is now underway to name the sports hall at John Orwell Sports Centre (which doesn’t currently have a name) in Dennis’s memory. The petition will be available online shortly, but can be signed at John Orwell and in the Turk’s Head Cafe.
