Costa del Wapping basks in sunshine – at the Wapping Shindig 2013

Temperatures rose above thirty degrees during the heatwave in Wapping this weekend and residents flocked to Wapping Green for the third and possibly best ever Wapping Shindig.

“Community spirit at it’s best, no one does it like Wapping!”, said local resident Jenny who has lived here for over thirty years.

The celebration of the Wapping community started at 11am as stalls setup on E1W’s village green and festivities continued into the warm summer evening, which ended with a grand finale of residents jigging on Wapping Green to the Diddley Dees.

Sunshine and fiesta spirit were shining stronger than ever in Wapping.

We joined in Shindig celebrations this year but did manage to snap a few moments during the day, to make sure Costa Del Wapping is recorded in history, so here are a few of our favourites:

Whilst Mr Bubbles was keeping the children entertained, the legendary Ray Newton from the History of Wapping Trust was giving guided history walks.

The actors dressed in period costume brought Ray’s history stories to life as they lay in the street for the Wapping protest.

For more photos of Ray Newton’s history walks and the actors, from Wapping Arts (formerly Actor Works) see the Love Wapping website:

Thank you Wapping

A massive thank you to the Turk’s Head charity for organising the Wapping Shindig 2013 – especially Amanda Day. Also to all the sponsors, main sponsor Cluttons, contributors, the Diddley Dees and everyone else who made it a Wapping day to remember.
