Battle of Cable Street 75th anniversary events

Local events to mark the anniversary are being held across our area – from Friday 30th September through to Sunday 9th October.

On 4th October 1936, over 250,000 protesters clashed with Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists when East Enders defended their community – the 1936 protest became known as the ‘Battle of Cable Street’.

Anniversary celebrations start with a cabaret evening at 7.30pm this Friday 30th September at Wilton’s Grand Music Hall, including ‘Manouche’ – the all-live, electrified, gypsy swing ensemble.

On Saturday 1st October, a Tower Hamlets community day will run at St George’s from 12pm-4.30pm followed by a Concert for Cable Street at 7.30pm at Wilton’s Grand Music Hall.

Wilton’s also brings us a full day of events on Sunday 6th October and exciting events throughout the week up until Sunday 9th October (details below).

The Battle of Cable Street 1936

This photograph is from Sue Clamp, who describes it as:

“A still from my father’s cine films, taken on the 4th October 1936, when Oswald Mosley tried to march with his blackshirts through the streets of East London. Their way was blocked by 300,000 anti-fascists. Dad said he was nearly arrested when he climbed up a lamp-post to film the events”.

Until just a couple of weeks ago the Cable Street mural was still covered in scaffolding.

Now fully restored and repainted by artist Paul Butler, the Cable Street mural will be officially launched on Saturday 1st October during the celebrations.
